How Hong Kong Residents Can Open an HSBC UK Account to Pay for Claude
2026-06-20
Using Claude in Hong Kong requires solving two problems: getting access, and sorting out payment. Most guides focus on one. This one covers both.
The two problems HK users face with Claude
First, Claude's API and web app have connectivity restrictions in certain regions — without a VPN, connections from Hong Kong often fail silently or time out entirely.
Second, some HK-issued cards are declined by international billing systems, including Anthropic's payment processor. Even users with valid Visa or Mastercard cards sometimes find their subscription attempts rejected.
A UK bank account solves the payment problem. DuckDuckLink solves the access problem. Let's start with the bank account.
HSBC's international account opening — a legitimate service for HK customers
HSBC Hong Kong officially offers overseas account opening in 20 destinations, including the UK. This is a product HSBC markets directly to its HK customers — not a workaround. If you hold an eligible HSBC HK account, you can apply for a UK account entirely from your phone, without visiting a UK branch or even leaving Hong Kong.
Who is eligible
You need to hold one of the following HSBC HK account tiers:
- HSBC One — the most accessible tier, no premium balance required
- HSBC Premier — for customers with HKD 1,000,000+ Total Relationship Balance
- HSBC Premier Elite — higher tier
- HSBC Global Private Banking — highest tier
Opening a UK account is free for all tiers above. If you don't yet have an HSBC HK account, you'll need to open one first before applying for the overseas account.
How to apply — step by step
Step 1 — Open HSBC Mobile Banking
Log in to your HSBC HK app. Navigate to More → International Services → Open an Overseas Account.
Step 2 — Select United Kingdom
Choose the UK from the list of 20 available destinations and confirm you meet the eligibility requirements.
Step 3 — Prepare your documents
You'll need:
- Valid passport
- Proof of address (bank statement or utility bill)
- Employment and income details
Have these ready to photograph and upload directly in the app.
Step 4 — Submit your application
Complete the application and submit. HSBC will review it and open your UK account within approximately 10–14 working days.
Step 5 — Receive your UK debit card
Once approved, HSBC will issue you a UK debit card. HSBC Premier customers can arrange to collect their card at a branch before travelling. Other customers receive their card by post to a UK address, or via their HSBC branch when visiting.
Your UK account comes with a UK sort code and account number — making it accepted by virtually all international billing systems.
Now sort out access — with DuckDuckLink
A UK bank account gets your subscription through. But without a VPN, Claude still won't connect from Hong Kong.
This is where DuckDuckLink comes in. It's a VPN built for speed and privacy, with servers optimised for exactly this use case. When you connect through DuckDuckLink, your traffic routes through an unrestricted region — and Claude works as intended.
Getting started takes under a minute:
- Sign up at duckducklink.com — includes a 1-day free trial
- Connect to a server outside Hong Kong
- Open Claude — it connects immediately
Once you're connected, your UK debit card handles the subscription, and DuckDuckLink handles the access. Both problems solved.
Try DuckDuckLink free
Every DuckDuckLink plan includes a 1-day free trial — no credit card required to start. Connect in under a minute and try Claude, ChatGPT, and other AI tools that are restricted in Hong Kong.
